During La Niña, cooler water from the depths of the ocean is drawn up to the surface in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific region. Driving winds from east to west then push warmer seas closer to Australia. That aids in the creation of more clouds and moisture plus windier conditions. The La Niña cycle typically brings us heavy rain an increased risk of flooding.

- Are the roof and basement waterproof membranes intact? Any existing cracks that could lead to water intrusion? Any signs of water seepage where the wall meets the floor in the basement?
- Inspect the walls and floors. If cracks have appeared, repair or seal them immediately. Water has a way of finding a small entryway and making it bigger over time.
- Are the gutters and downspouts installed away from the foundation? Are they clean?
- Ensure that the ground has a graded fall that guides water away from the foundation.
- Inspect for a drainage layer of gravel to eliminate trapping water-laden soil against foundation walls.
- Are the drains below the slab directing water effectively to a stormwater system?
