Is your building ready for La Niña?

La Niña ALERT continues—the likelihood of La Niña is around 70%. Can you feel it?
The Bureau of Meteorology states: “A La Niña ALERT is not a guarantee that La Niña will occur, rather it is an indication that most of the typical precursors of an event are in place. 𝗟𝗮 𝗡𝗶𝗻̃𝗮 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲-𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮.”

During La Niña, cooler water from the depths of the ocean is drawn up to the surface in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific region. Driving winds from east to west then push warmer seas closer to Australia. That aids in the creation of more clouds and moisture plus windier conditions. The La Niña cycle typically brings us heavy rain an increased risk of flooding.

Typical signs of water ingress:

  • Are the roof and basement waterproof membranes intact? Any existing cracks that could lead to water intrusion? Any signs of water seepage where the wall meets the floor in the basement?
  • Inspect the walls and floors. If cracks have appeared, repair or seal them immediately. Water has a way of finding a small entryway and making it bigger over time.
  • Are the gutters and downspouts installed away from the foundation? Are they clean?
  • Ensure that the ground has a graded fall that guides water away from the foundation.
  • Inspect for a drainage layer of gravel to eliminate trapping water-laden soil against foundation walls.
  • Are the drains below the slab directing water effectively to a stormwater system?

Be prepared for the wet weather season – Carry out works now ahead of storm season

If you have experienced seepage issues during big rain events in the past, now is a good time to speak with a remedial leak sealing and concrete defect repair specialist to discuss a lasting solution to the problem. Once the storm season hits, the leaks are very likely to recommence and can potentially present a larger issue than before.

Seepage issues may typically originate through a crack in the concrete, a masonry wall, a failed waterproof membrane or may be created by hydrostatic pressure under the foundation caused by the rising groundwater table.

If damp issues in your building are not properly remediated, it can lead to a multitude of issues in your building, such as concrete deterioration, destruction of building materials, pest infestation (white ants/termites), mould growth and belongings damaged by moisture. Over time, it could eventually lead to structural damage if left untreated.

Give Waterstop Solutions a call today if you need assistance and repairs done.
