Waterstop Solutions NSW team attended a large-scale food manufacturing facility in Sydney where they inspected two floor slab panels that had cracked and also had become unstable, as identified by our client. Due to the failure of the slab our Sydney team was given the task of removing localised sections of the slab that were unstable, followed by preparing and filling the sections with new concrete.
Methods used:
The boundaries work area was secured for public safety for the duration of the works. The slab was cut using wet methods when saw cutting or breaking any concrete. The ensuing slurry was vacuumed into a wet vac system whilst the concrete rubble was emptied into a skip bin.
The ends of the cut reinforcement were coated in a primer system which protects the steel by electrochemical means to avoid future rusting.
New 12mm galvanised reinforcement bars were drilled into the existing slab and chemically set into place with Hilti glue. Furthermore, some additional reinforcement grids were laid in preparation for the pour of the concrete mix. The concrete mix we used at this job was Nanocrete R4, which is a single component, extra high-strength, high modulus, shrinkage compensated structural repair mortar.
The open edges of the sections were formed.
Concrete was mixed outside to minimalise dust inside the factory.
The concrete mix was poured and screeded.
As the slab dried, rough edges were rubbed out.
The wet slab was sectioned off and left to cure until meeting its MPA strength requirements to support greater loads and traffic. The area was mopped and thoroughly cleaned before leaving the site. A joint sealant will subsequently be installed to the expansion joints to protect them from possible future ingress of water, chemicals and other foreign matter.
For further long-term protection, our general recommendation is to install a coating system to help ensure a long service life of the concrete. We recommend implementing a maintenance program tailored for the environment the building is subjected to including dedicated inspections. Regular maintenance checks will help identify any problems in the early stages for repairs, which again will help enhance the service life and reduce the life cycle cost of concrete structures.
