Staff Member Spotlight Interview

1. What inspired you to join the Waterstop Solutions team?

Adrian* first invited me to come and join the Waterstop Solutions team after coming together on a few projects requiring some access solutions. After tackling a few issues on site with Adrian, I realised that he approached customers as the highest priority and thus delivering a quality product in the timeframe that was promised was the subsequent mission. I thought, “I can work with this guy.”  *(Adrian Schokman, Waterstop Solutions NSW Manager)

2. What three words describe Waterstop Solutions?

Positive results guaranteed

3. What does a typical day look like for you?

Early starts and late finishes. From site to site, supplier to supplier, then back to the office and back out again. On the laptop when needed and on the tools if required.

4. What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

Giving clients good news. Hearing positive feedback about our products and technicians makes it feel worthwhile.

5. What are the most common building defects/issues you see?

Poor workmanship. It is obvious when you turn up to a client’s site and corners have previously been cut. There are no shortcuts when it comes to quality.

6. What are your hopes for our industry?

That safety continues to grow as a cultural staple rather than an administrative requirement.

7. Your favourite, most challenging project & why?

When Sydney went into lockdown, we went into a couple of crazy days where we managed to get our techs back onsite and working. It wasn’t the easiest learning curve, but getting up in the morning and helping each other through this pandemic was good for us all.

8. What makes you happy?

Silly things, like playing UNO and having a few beers with loved ones while singing loudly to songs I barely know the words to. “Who’s gonna make the GRAVVVVY!!?”

9.  Tell us something about you that people may not know

I made a significant archaeological discovery in the Blue Mountains. As part of my role with G.A.H.A.I (Gundungurra Aboriginal Heritage Association), I assisted in archaeological surveys and found a site with artefacts, hand stencils and rock art, where there had previously been no availability to survey. I was lucky enough to be one of three men alive to ever forge into that gully.

10. What are your favourite things to do outside work?

Family get-togethers. Doesn’t matter if it is watching TV, going to sporting events or just going for a drive… as long as the family is involved.
