La Niña Alert – Prepare for a possibly wetter than average conditions over spring 2020

The Bureau of Meteorology has released its 2020 Spring Outlook, showing much of Australia has a high likelihood of above average rainfall in the coming months.

BOM (Bureau of Meteorology) has raised its El Niño-Southern Oscillation Outlook (ENSO) to La Niña alert status and Bureau Manager of Climate Operations Dr Andrew Watkins reports that BOM is forecasting that the likelihood of La Niña forming in the next months is three times more likely than normal. It typically means a higher chance of rainfall during spring in the eastern, central and northern regions of Australia.

Winter 2020 was in the top 10 warmest winters on record. It started out very dry, but ended with more rainfall than usual. August was the wettest August on records for Australia since 2016 and now we are likely to have wetter than average conditions over the spring season.

What is La Niña?

La Niña is sometimes referred to as the cold phase of ENSO and El Niño as the warm phase of ENSO. These deviations from normal surface temperatures can have large-scale impacts not only on ocean processes, but also on global weather and climate.

El Niño occurs more often than La Niña and the ENSO cycle loosely operates over timescales from 1 to 8 years.

During the El Niño cycle we generally experience reduced rainfall, warmer temperature, higher risk of bush fire and reduced risk of tropical cyclones. During the peak of El Niño, the ocean surface temperature is higher than normal.

The La Niña cycle, on the other hand brings us heavy rain and increased flood and tropical cyclone risk, and decreased bush fire potential. During its peak, the ocean surface temperature is lower than normal.

Be prepared for the wet weather season – Carry out works now ahead of storm season

Do you have water ingress issues when it rains?

We have just come out of a fairly dry winter season, so the signs of water seepage have likely been minimal during this time.

If you have experienced seepage issues during big rain events in the past, now is a good time to speak with a remedial leak sealing specialist to discuss a lasting solution to the problem. Once the storm season hits, the leaks are very likely to recommence and can potentially present a larger issue than before.

Seepage issues may typically originate through a crack in the concrete, a masonry wall, a failed waterproof membrane or may be created by hydrostatic pressure under the foundation caused by the rising groundwater table.

If damp issues in your building are not properly remediated, it can lead to a multitude of issues in your building, such as concrete deterioration, destruction of building materials, pest infestation (white ants/termites), mould growth and belongings damaged by moisture. Over time, it could eventually lead to structural damage if left untreated.

Book an inspection before the situation becomes critical and before the upcoming peak-season kicks in.

Give us a call to discuss the best protective treatment application for your vertical and horizontal surfaces to help you choose the appropriate product and methods to protect them and how to best prepare the surface before installation for best performance.

If you have any issues with water ingress, rooftop leaks, leaking balcony, leaking basement, wet lift pit, cracking concrete slabs, structural cracks, concrete deterioration, spalling concrete, concrete cancer, deteriorated joints, moisture, seepage, efflorescence, rising damp and/or high-flow active leaks in concrete structures, we would be happy to assist you. You are welcome to contact us with any questions that you may have.
