A cold joint is the point of connection where old and new concrete meet. It commonly occurs during construction when one batch of concrete has begun to set before the next batch is added. The old and the new concrete do not intermix and a so-called “cold joint” is formed as a result, creating a poor bond between the two batches in the concrete. In general, cold joints do not create an integrity issue. However, there is a chance that a poor bond between the two batches of concrete creates a weak zone with potential voids that may in some cases permit water to leak through the slab, and this can lead to water damage.
